Will High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens be leaving the Wildcats behind to run with a new pack? In news that is sure to make every tween in the universe blow out their vocal chords in a fit of franchise-converging ecstasy, MTV News reported on Tuesday that the starlet has auditioned to play a werewolf in the upcoming Twilight sequel, New Moon.

Ashley Greene, who plays Alice in the blockbuster series, broke the news to MTV at a Golden Globes afterparty on Sunday night, telling the outlet: "I think she'd be great. According to MTV, Hudgens is up for the part of Leah Clearwater, the only female werewolf in Jacob's tribe. Leah a bitter, heartbroken character who can't forgive Alpha werewolf Sam for dumping her after he "imprints" on his soulmate  is introduced in New Moon and features prominently in the subsequent books.

However, reps for both Hudgens and the movie studio, Summit Entertainment, were quick to deny the reports to Entertainment Weekly. The actress, who was photographed earlier this week at a Golden Globes swag suite with Twilight star Taylor Lautner, is not being considered for any Twilight role, according to the reps. It's too bad.  Summit Entertainment must realize that combining the High School Musical audience with the terrifyingly rabid Twilight fanbase would ensure that everyone under the age of 16 relocates to their nearest theatre to live for the entire duration of New Moon's run. The only way the studio wouldn't grant her the part is if Hudgens used her audition to demonstrate her take on the character through modern interpretive dance (and even then, she'd probably be a lock). Were the sugary-sweet starlet to join the already unbearably saccharine film franchise, the world would be plagued with an epidemic of adolescent retinal diabetes shortly after New Moon's release on Nov. 20.
